The problem
THOUGHTS
Negative thinking can take over your life, “I’m a failure”, “life’s not worth living”, “it’s my fault” are all very common thought processes when you suffer from depression. You may find yourself procrastinating over the simplest of things including worrying about the past or the future.
FEELINGS
The feelings created by depression can vary from feeling overwhelmed in situations, being unhappy, irritable or frustrated to having low self-esteem, feeling or emptiness, sadness or upset.
BEHAVIOURS
Depression can change the way you act leading you to withdraw from others and stop you from enjoying your activities. You may find you lack concentration and find it hard to complete everyday chores.
PHYSICAL
Physical symptoms can include having less energy, feeling tired or run down. You may also have disturbed sleeping patterns. It’s not uncommon to have aches and pains that can’t be explained, change in weight and appetite, loss of libido or even constipation.
Types of depression
the NHS categories depression into three types
Mild depression can often improve by itself and a doctor may recommend you wait it out. You will usually have a follow-up appointment in a few weeks to monitor your progress.
Sometimes talking through your feelings can be of huge benefit and this can be with friends, family or even local helpful groups. Your doctor may recommend self-help books or mental health apps.
Mild to moderate depression can be treated with all the above but the doctor may also recommend some form of talking therapy which could be counseling, CBT or indeed hypnotherapy.
Moderate to severe depression can be treated with a combination of talking therapy and antidepressants and particularly, if your depression is quite severe the doctor may refer you to a mental health team made up of psychologists, psychiatrists or specialist nurses.
The most important thing to understand is that depression can be treated. There are lots of resources and experts on hand to help you feel better.
Imagine I gave you a board game you had never played before.
Could you play or beat me?
Now imagine I spent time with you teaching you the rules of the game, how the pieces moved and then practiced with you.
Now could you play or beat me?
